Families

Readings:

Elder Henry B. Eyring, The Family (A BYU Address on 5 November 1995)
Elder Robert D. Hales, The Eternal Family (Ensign, November 1996m p. 64)
Elder Tad Callister, Our Identity and Destiny (BYU Campus Education Week, 14 August 2012)

     As I have read these three readings I was overcome with the knowledge that each and every word was from God. These men are His prophets, seers and revelatory on earth today to speak to us because He cannot. I know these men are inspired as they are asked to speak to the world. I focused greatly on Elder Hales' words. I wasn't sure what to pinpoint until I was rereading things and came upon paragraph 27. He spoke of an Air Force pilot who crashed and died while on a training mission. He was assigned to represent the Air Force/Government by staying with and getting his body home. He then attended the services and presented the flag to his mourning widow. He was aware of how sad and dark the service was. He stated, "The funeral service was dark and dismal. No mention was made of his goodness or his accomplishments. His name was never mentioned. At the conclusion of the services, his widow turned to me and asked, 'Bob, what is really going to happen to Don?'" Elder Hales explained of the Resurrection and how they could be together eternally through baptism and being sealed in the temple. What an amazing experience that must have been, obviously it was because it's stuck with him ever since.

     I am grateful to know that God has placed the family unit as such importance. He organized us from the beginning in families and that's the way we always will be. It's sad that the world doesn't see things this way. Satan has a strong hold on so many and has worked hard to deceive people into believing that family is something completely different from God's way. There is sadness in death but we understand that it is merely a separation for a time, it is not the end forever.

The Importance of Families

The Family is a critical part of God’s plan of happiness. We were formed into families before we came to this earth and are living as families here. This must be important to God. He ordained marriage as being between a man and a woman because He knows this is the only way to create life and creating life is His plan from the beginning.

Adam and Eve were married; we find this information at the end of Genesis chapter 2. God created man and knew he should not be alone so woman was created. They were to be together and help one another. Then once they partook of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they had to leave the Garden of Eden and began to form a family. God saw it necessary to have families then and it is just as important today.

Not only is marriage ordained of God, but so are families. Thus procreation must be saved for marriage between a man and a woman. In THE FAMILY: A Proclamation to the World the very first paragraph makes this exact statement. This document comes from God through His prophets on earth today. It states: “We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children” (bold added for emphasis).

I know this to be true and I know that it comes from God through His prophets who do live on this earth today even as Adam, Moses, Noah, Isaiah, and Jesus Christ Himself.

I am a child of God, And he has sent me here,
Has given me an earthly home with parents kind and dear.

I am a child of God, And so my needs are great;
Help me to understand his words before it grows too late.

I am a child of God. Rich blessings are in store;
If I but learn to do his will I’ll live with him once more.

I am a child of God. His promises are sure;
Celestial glory shall be mine if I can but endure.

Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do to live with him someday.
